The Saint-Denis marina<\/a> is the fruit of mankind’s fight <\/strong>against the silting up of the coastline, a battle won after several centuries of research and unsuccessful attempts.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

The port’s evolution over the centuries<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The construction of the harbor’s first jetty may date back to the XII\u1d49 century<\/strong>, enabling Chassiron wine to be transported to the port of La Rochelle. It was in the XVII\u1d49 century that the first documents mentioning a tax to repair the port were found. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The next two centuries were a succession of dike and jetty constructions and repairs<\/strong>, battling against silting that was stronger than anything else. At the beginning of the XIX\u1d49 century, any idea of a protected harbor was even abandoned<\/strong>, the breakwater destroyed. Thus, in 1926, in Paul Thomas’s historical work, L’\u00eele d’Ol\u00e9ron \u00e0 travers les si\u00e8cles<\/em>, we read: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

” Before rounding the extreme tip of the island, there’s another abandoned port: Saint-Denis, also a victim of sandbank encroachment. <\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

The rebirth of the port and its development as a tourist attraction<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Thetourism boom<\/strong> revived the project. This time, the studies were better conducted, the financing less difficult to obtain, and the materials more studied and solid<\/strong>. In 1989, the town’s new port was inaugurated. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since summer 2006, the Saint-Denis harbor’s infrastructure has been complemented by a shopping area<\/a> featuring bistros, restaurants<\/a>, ice-cream parlors, chandlery, souvenirs, local products, bike rentals, bookshops, jewelry and more. In an exceptional environment, the port, which has been awarded Europe’s Blue Flag<\/strong>, offers all the services and shops that yachtsmen can expect. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The walk along the quay<\/strong> is not disturbed by cars, as this area is reserved for pedestrians.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
